Give A Laptop, Change The World

While I was sitting back enjoying an interesting episode of House that I DVR'd last night, a commercial came on that touched me a little bit.

The commercial was from the One Laptop per Child Foundation. Their mission is to create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing them with a rugged laptop full of learning content.

So I hopped on to their site at amazon.com/xo to find out more information on the foundation. I liked what their focus was and what they were about, so I bought some laptops for their cause. I have a soft spot for kids, hopefully this will help in my continued efforts to try to effect kids lives positively.

If you're interested, check the website above.

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing this moment and sharing with children abroad. You should also check out The Nothing But Nets Campaign (http://nothingbutnets.net/). This organization allows for individuals or teams to come together to purchase mosquito nets for families in some of the poorest parts of the world that are plagued by Malaria; namely African countries. Just one bed net can last a family up to four years and costs only $10. Malaria is the leading cause of death for children in Africa. In fact, over 3,000 die each day from the disease.

My Sister and I are giving to this cause in lieu of purchasing expensive Christmas gifts for each other this year in efforts to make a small contribution to such a worthy cause. We'll check out the laptop initiative as well.

Thanks again for sharing!

David,

You are doing a great thing!!! It is truely comforting to see Black Role-Models feel a need to be involved. There are so many things that anybody can accomplish. There is nothing too big or too small. David, this may sound like a grand scheme idea, but I feel you have to do it. David, you must start a foundation or non-profit, or at least join a non-profit's Board of Trust, to champion your cause to help educate children. If you have not read these books, please do so: Jonathan Kozol "The Shame of the Nation," and John Howard Griffin "Black Like Me." Read these books. You can truely make a difference, especially in the words from a book.

I checked out the website. The "digital divide" is such a huge problem, locally and internationally, and I applaud this organization for attempting to breach it by providing technology to children who otherwise can't afford it. The social worker in me absolutely loves this idea. Thank you for supporting the cause -- it's definitely a worthy one!

I still have more to say about your Miami weekend in my back to the 2 week future Miami weekend part 2 episode. But first, I have to give you my Jansen Jungle commercial on how great of a person you are to me and this world. This really touched me how you actually bought these laptops for these kids when you saw that commercial. You are so amazing. I was just thinking about how many kids lives will be changed positively by your incredible kindness. Who knows what kind of great things these kids might become from the education with these laptops. David, I can see how much you have a soft spot for kids and you continually do these great things for kids in so many different ways and this is why you are Mr. Wonderful to me and so many kids and adults. You and your blog are better for me than any medication I could ever take for my dystonia condition. The therapy I get from expressing my views and feelings to you has helped me beyond what you will ever know and honestly there are not enough words to explain the positive difference you have made in my life. Even when I am having bad days, I just think about the incredible positive impact you have had on my life. You will impact more peoples lives positively than you will ever know. I just want to keep telling you how big a part of my life you are to me becaause you truely are one of the best persons in this world. I hope there is one day sometime in December or January where I can come up to Orlando from Lakeland so we can actually meet in person. This would mean so much to me. I do not want to get in your way and I know you have a busy schedule, but I just wonder if I can see a practice of yours at the Disney Sports Complex or if there is going to be some kind of track meet in the Central Florida area that I could come to. As you know, I can only drive the back roads because of my dystonia condition to Orlando from Lakeland but if there is a day I know in advance that I could come up to see your track practice or whatever this would be so great to me. I promise you I will not get in your way. I just want for you to meet me in person and let you see in person who I am. I have never been to a pro track event in my life and I would really love to be at 1 of your meets in person cheering you on to sub 13 victory. Please let me know if any of this is possible. Thank you so much, David , for everything that you have brought to my life!!!! Take care and God Bless You Always!!!!
